Reflecting the Opinions of Medical Welfare Sites in Unique Products to Support the Independence of Users

With the motto of “helping people”, Kishi Engineering (Satokatacho, Izumo; CEO: Yukio Kishi) is engaged in activities extending from research and development of products such as medical welfare devices created to strict standards, to their design, manufacture, and commercialization. The products of our company (medical, nursing care, and welfare fields) are not only effective at reducing the work loads of nurses and caregivers, and providing support to the elderly and disabled, but also have unique specifications that can encourage the independence of their users. One example, the “Breathing Trainer” for children with brain disabilities, is a global product with exports making up roughly 70% of its total volume.

The “Breathing Trainer”, the only one of its kind in the world

Mr. Kishi was formerly employed as an engineer at a local major agricultural machinery manufacturer. After his eldest daughter suffered brain damage resulting from complications due to a cold, his fatherly love and determination to do anything he could to cure her led him to resign from his job, and he started his own company in 1985 to search for a treatment method. His family of three traveled to the United States where he learned from the Institutes for the Achievement of Human Potential, a local NPO specializing in brain disabilities, that proper methods of breathing can help to alleviate bodily rigidity and seizures caused by such disorders. However, in order to achieve a consistent breathing rhythm, it was necessary for two adults to repetitively compress and relax the areas around the chest manually for several hours. This prompted Mr. Kishi to develop a device that could instead input a proper breathing pattern into the midbrain. After numerous improvements, the model that is currently being manufactured now uses an exhalation to inhalation ratio of 2 to 1. This device, which is the only one of its kind in the world, has a demand of several dozen units per year, roughly 70% of which are exported to countries including the United States and Indonesia. It has received great praise from users in locations such as Southeast Asia, and its export volumes are expected to rise since there is an increasing number of customers who wish to purchase it.

Products that can draw out the “power to live” of their users

Born from our desire to make further contributions to the medical welfare field, our company is continuously developing products created from the standpoint of users and delivering them to the world. These include motor-driven wheelchairs that can greatly assist muscular dystrophy patients by raising and lowering them between the floor and their beds; the “Comfortable Rehabilitation Walker Sabaru”, a walker for rehabilitation that can also hold IV equipment or oxygen tanks; and the “Suisui Cart” which can hold a shopping basket and allow users to maintain their strength and carry out walking training while shopping. All of our products are designed so that they can be safely used by people requiring nursing care even by themselves, and can contribute to easing the burdens of caregivers and naturally drawing out the “power to live” of their users.

Mr. Kishi has stated his desire to carry out new future endeavors with various themes, in order to provide assistance to people with illnesses or disabilities, or who require nursing care, so that they can live out their daily lives independently.

The “Suisui Cart” can reduce strain on the legs and hips by allowing users to rest their bodies on its equipped forearm support.

It can draw out the “power to live” of its users through walking rehabilitation training during the everyday activity of shopping.

▼ Taking on challenges in new fields

As a new and recent initiative, we have begun attempts in the development of products which focus on utilizing new forms of energy. In a project for Shimane prefecture, we are providing small-scale hydroelectric power generation using streams in mountainous regions where electric lines cannot be installed, and holding demonstration tests of fences electrified by this power to protect against wild boars. Mr. Kishi also has ideas for projects such as wind power generation that does not use windmills, and electrical storage devices to accumulate generated power. By applying his own technological expertise, he is determined to not only improve the lifestyles of people, but to also protect the natural environment in his home prefecture of Shimane.
